“The first exhibition of María Cortés, presented by artist Jordi Mollà, brings together two creative voices in dialogue. Cortés’s vibrant colours and poetic symbols meet Mollà’s expressive energy, offering a celebration of imagination, tradition and renewal.”
In the series of works presented in this exhibition, María Cortés unveils the more personal dimensions of her imagination. Through a vibrant and intelligent use of colour, she conveys the joy of her inner world, drawing inspiration from her frequent journeys to the Dominican Republic and Miami: flowers, palm trees, and always the figure of a black goddess, adorned with the magical number eight on her dress, echoing the iconography of the Virgin of Guadalupe. At the same time, Cortés offers her own modern interpretation of Las Meninas, reimagined as heroines—radiant with flowers and colour. These works, in turn, pay homage to and reconnect us with the Spanish Baroque tradition, while also invoking the figure of Picasso, who serves as a bridge in the exhibition between Cortés’s artistic discourse and that of Jordi Mollà. Together, both artists share space and time this spring at the Nicolás Cortés Gallery.
